The Xplore program is an opportunity for elementary school students, 3rd-5th grades, to continue learning during the summer months. Instructors teach content-specific mini-courses that engage young learners in new and creative ways. Classes take place at Point Defiance Park (SAMI) and in downtown Tacoma (SOTA).
SOTA offers students three camps. The music camp showcases a student’s inner Rock star. They learn how different genres of music work together and perform an original song. In the visual art camp, students work alongside art museums in Downtown Tacoma to create their own masterpieces inspired by the current exhibits. In the dance camp, students learn different styles of dance and work together to choreograph a performance.
There are also three camps offered at SAMI. The marine studies camp explores the Puget Sound while teaching students about the marine life. The zoo and trail camp is a highly interactive class that combines nature walks with learning about the animals at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. The makerspace camp teaches students basic computer science and engineering concepts through designing and building.
